Ever since 1964 when the legendary trainer Fred Winter bought Uplands following his retirement from the saddle, the yard has been one of the pre-eminent stables in the country. In the 60s, 70s and 80s the yard was full of racing heroes such as Jay Trump, Anglo, Bula, Pendil, Lanzarote, Midnight Court and Celtic Shot. More recently the yard has produced the Hennessy Gold Cup winners Couldn’t be Better, Suny Bay and John and Lavinia Taylor’s Gingembre. The yard is now firmly focused on Flat racing and they expect that the sort of success associated with Uplands over the jumps will quickly materialise at the bigger meetings during the summer. Recent developments to the private gallops have ensured that the yard is now ideal for the training of Flat horses.
